Last weekend, Hillsdale track and field athletes traveled to Eastern Michigan University to take part in the EMU Invitational. Here the Chargers managed to secure four NCAA provisional qualifications.

"It was a good tune-up meet for the next couple weeks," assistant head coach Andy Towne said.

Senior Jen Gunderson secured the first NCAA provisionally-qualifying mark of her athletic career in the 1500-meter race with a time of 4:39.05.

"It was nice to see Gunderson run so well," Towne said. "She's worked really hard this year."

Pole-vaulter Sarah Kauk, a junior, and javelin-thrower Kristin Donovan, a senior, were close to provisional qualification status, barely missing their respective marks.

Kauk vaulted 11 feet 7 3/4 inches to finish fourth, and Donovan threw 130 feet 10 inches to take second place.

On the men's side, three athletes recorded provisionally-qualifying marks, including high jumper Andrew Dodson, a junior, and throwers Jason Stomps, a junior, and sophomore Aaron Falk.

Dodson finished in fourth place with a jump of 6 feet 8 3/4 inches.

Falk qualified for the third consecutive week with 178 feet 11 inches, and Stomps, a fellow thrower, followed behind him with a 175 feet 10 inch throw.

Pole-vaulter Evan Steward barely missed provisionally qualifying, despite it being his first time competitively jumping this year. Steward finished with a jump of 15 feet 1 inches.

After the Gina Relays finish this weekend the track team heads to the GLIAC Championships May 1-2 at Saginaw Valley State University.

In a month the qualifying athletes head to the NCAA Division II Championships in Pomona, Calif.
