The Hillsdale College softball team lost three games this week - two to University of Missouri-St. Louis Tuesday and their second game against Quincy University Wednesday. The upside of their week came yesterday after defeating Quincy on the road, 5-0.
Pitcher Ellen Eldridge, a junior, said their win was "everything we've been looking for [this] season."
"The first game was pretty much amazing," Eldridge said. "We hit really well and defense was amazing."
Eldridge pitched a shutout game. She said her teammates' outstanding performance made it easier for her to pitch well.
As for helpful team members, freshman Jordan Kellie turned a double play during the game by tagging second base and throwing the next runner out at first.
"Pretty amazing, it was pretty much amazing," Eldridge said of the play.
Most of the players agreed their first game against Quincy was one in which they overcame the problems they have been struggling with all season.
"We just played a lot better these past few days," junior Dana Gould said. "The defense was a lot better."
Junior Katelin Simon agreed and said the fact that the team lost its second game to Quincy, even though it scored four runs, proves the necessity of good defense.
"When we lose, we tend to beat ourselves rather than our opponents beating us," Simon said. "The first game we had the intensity, [but] in the second game, we fell into the rut of not getting the little things done. If we continue to let our defense slip, we will continue to beat ourselves."
