Transfer sophomore Pat Krebs got a win, a save and three RBIs this weekend as the Hillsdale College baseball team split with Northwood University Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday Hillsdale lost game one 9-5, but had a chance to tie it up in the bottom of the seventh when the Timberwolves loaded the bases with two outs. Second basemen Brandon Hubbard, a senior, lined out to end the game, eliminating the threat.
Senior Tom Molter threw the winning game two, striking out 10 as the Chargers won 7-5 in a game delayed half an hour by lightning. Krebs began the game as the designated hitter, where he went 1-for-2 with a sacrifice bunt and an RBI, and then came on to close the game for 1.2 innings.
The Chargers held pattern Sunday, dropping the first game 11-2 but winning game two 9-4 behind Krebs' complete game.
Krebs pitched out of some trouble in the fourth, getting a huge double play behind him. The next three innings, he was lights out.
"I was trying to get ahead of hitters to get out of it," Krebs said. "I threw a lot of sliders and the defense stepped up."
Krebs struck out five Timberwolves in seven innings, adding to his two on Sunday.
Hillsdale and Northwood, each with 6-14 conference records, are now in a three-way tie for sixth in the GLIAC with Mercyhurst College. Hillsdale is now 11-23 overall with only two weeks left in the season.
Hillsdale plays its final four home games this week, taking on the Indianapolis University Greyhounds Tuesday and closing out the 2008 home slate with Rochester College Wednesday. Both doubleheaders begin at 2 p.m.
