All-American sophomore Jared Krout is fast: he has been winning events at track meets since seventh grade. He continued the tradition in March, ranking nationally in the 200 and 400-meter dash and snagging All-American status for the second year in a row.

"I was always the fastest kid growing up," he said. "I was pretty good from the start, and as I got older, I got better."

Krout is also fiercely competitive off the track. Senior Blake England recalled watching Krout play a game of NCAA Football 08 with fellow All-American, junior Andrew Dodson.

"It was one of the greatest video games ever, and it was the only time I've ever seen Jared lose," England said.

Krout's roommate and teammate, sophomore Aaron Falk, said Krout "knows his race and sticks to it. His biggest competitor is himself."

Krout said he was excited to finish fourth and fifth at Nationals, but wants to run even faster.

"I was happy to accomplish that, but at the same time I knew there was room for improvement because [my times] weren't first and second," he said.

Teammates and friends know Krout as a "man of few words" with a quiet sense of humor.

"He's pretty reserved, but when he says something it's really funny or worth listening to," Falk said.
