The class of 2008 will soon be able to leave their mark on Hillsdale College's traditional senior sidewalk, but in a different location: the old snack bar patio. Students had formerly scrawled names, pictures and quotes on a patio attached to the north side of Strosacker Science Center.

Senior class advisor and Director of Career Planning Joanna Wisely said the college had to choose a new spot because of construction difficulties and the college's plan to put a statue of Margaret Thatcher in the old spot.

Senior Class President Cody Strecker said he met with Rich Péwé, vice president of administration, as soon as he heard about the construction.

"When I read the current place was going to be torn out, I talked to Mr. Péwé to make sure [there were] other possibilities," Strecker said.

Wisely said this is not the first time the sidewalk has moved locations.

"The senior sidewalk is a tradition …of at least 30 years," Wisely said. "It used to be outside of Central Hall."

Strecker said the change does not upset him.

"It was kind of a necessary change," Strecker said. "I don't think it's in a worse spot. It's kind of near where it used to be, and there is a little more room."

Wisely said there will be "senior celebration sidewalk painting" May 6 from 3 to 5 p.m. The alumni office will provide paint pens, ice cream and non-alcoholic drinks. Also, the Hillsdale College Alumni Board will award bricks for the alumni walk to seniors with the best sidewalk signs.

Wisely also said the career planning office will have extra paint pens available for students who cannot attend to sign the sidewalk at another time.

No matter the location, several seniors are excited the sidewalk will return.

"The sidewalk is such a tradition at Hillsdale," senior Abby Klarr said. "I remember walking across it as a freshman and looking forward to when it would be my turn to sign my name."
