Freshman catcher Anthony Giarmo knocked his first home run of the season to help the Hillsdale College baseball team end their eight-game losing streak and beat Mercyhurst College 2-0 Sunday.
Junior pitcher Scott Monterastelli threw the complete seven innings for the two-hit shutout, striking out three Lakers.
"I just threw strikes and let defense do the work behind me," Monterastelli said.
Hillsdale's other run in the game came from senior second basemen Dan Fodell's two-out triple in the fifth.
Earlier in the day, the Chargers dropped the first game of the doubleheader 4-2, scoring a few key runs but ultimately unable to overcome Laker pitcher Wes Craig.
Shortstop Brandon Hubbard liked what he saw from the team after a few games of lackluster hitting performances.
"If we hit, we're positive we can win," Hubbard, a senior, said.
Inclement weather kept the Chargers inside all weekend, and the teams played Sunday's games in frigid 30-degree weather with flecks of snow.
Freshman Dan Rhodes and senior Tom Molter will start tomorrow for the Chargers. Game one will begin at 2:00.
