Though the softball team went 3-1 this past weekend, their fighting spirit could not propel them to more victory in their away games Tuesday and Wednesday.
The team lost 7-1 and 8-0 to University of Southern Indiana Wednesday in Evansville, Ind. Adding salt to their wound, the bus broke down on the way back to campus.
"A half-hour outside Evansville the bus started shaking and broke down," head coach Jamie Meyers said during a phone interview Wednesday night. She estimated the team wouldn't arrive in Hillsdale until 2 a.m.
The Chargers started their week off with two losses to defending national champions Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. The first game brought a rapid 10-2 loss in five innings. Senior Aimee Genter and junior Jamie Vandenburgh pitched in game two where they put up a better fight, though the Chargers lost 9-6.
Last weekend, the team's performance was mixed, sweeping University of Dearborn, going 1-1 with Lake Superior State, and losing two games to Tiffin University.
"We're not playing a complete game," Meyers said. "We're always missing something [such as] defense, pitching or hitting."
Despite these difficulties, Hillsdale held onto their games with Tiffin until the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings. Three of the runs scored against Hillsdale were due to defensive mistakes.
Meyers said she sees improvement in her entire lineup. Senior Brecken Libbe agreed.
"I definitely think those Tiffin games were by far the best two games we played all year," Libbe said.
Libbe said the team "jumped out ahead" by scoring early and caught up when it was falling behind.
"We did a good job of battling back, [but] it just ended up that we fell short in the end," Libbe said. "We've shown a lot of fight in our games this weekend - more than we have all year."
