Hillsdale College artists of every medium and class will compete for $600 of prize money in a juried exhibition from April 15 to April 25.

Art Department Chairman Sam Knecht said the spring show is more strenuous for participants than the one each fall.

"In the fall, people enter lots, and we're not too fussy," said Knecht. "But in the spring, it's customary to have more professional presentation."

Junior Tricia Schoon said she is worried about this season's more stringent requirements.

"What will I exhibit? Whatever I have frames for!" she said.

Schoon said she hopes to show at least one watercolor and one drawing.

"Maybe a clay sculpture, but maybe not," she said. "People like to mess with those." Schoon has won runnerup for the Best-of-Show award in the past, as well as a faculty honorable mention. She said the spring competition can be challenging, because the judge's preferences can be unpredictable.

"It's difficult, because he's from outside," she said. "We're not sure what to expect."

Knecht said Paul Wolber, Spring Arbor University Professor Emeritus of Art, will judge the competition this year, for the second time. Wolber taught art for 30 years.

"He's a realist painter and architect, with a high degree of craftsmanship," Knecht said. "His artistic goals are very close to ours."

For senior art major Kate Reiner, the spring show is only the first exhibition in April. She and six other seniors will also exhibit their work in week-long senior shows during the last week of April and the first of May. She plans to show some photos and a half-size female sculpture.

"This show is more formal, but it's great," she said. She said students usually enter fewer pieces in the spring.

Schoon is also excited about the show.

"It brings some satisfaction to see everything up and under glass," she said. "It makes me proud, because I do put a lot of work into each piece."
