Changes and explanations
Issue date: 4/3/08 Section: Opinion
Readers may notice aesthetic changes to The Collegian for the remainder of its April issues - fewer color pages and 10 pages maximum - but they only hint at more serious changes.
Budget concerns and recent meetings between Collegian management and the Student Federation have led The Collegian to cut costs due to expectations that its advertising and subscription revenue will not meet its projected budget by the end of the school year.
The Collegian has been unusually slow in collecting revenue throughout the school year and has incurred larger than anticipated printing costs, but even with more rigorous collection of outstanding bills, will likely face a significant budgetary shortfall.
In lieu of stopping the printing of all April issues, savings will come by trimming printing costs and staff salaries for the final four issues. The Collegian will rigorously report its incoming funds to the Federation on a weekly basis as it moves to a more soluble position. The Federation will continuously evaluate its progress.
Moving forward, the Federation and Collegian both desire to see necessary institutional changes that will aid increased communication and a more streamlined process between Collegian management and the Federation Treasurer. Changes will likely lead to more clearly defined expectations and procedures, with the shared goal of publishing a great college newspaper and wisely allocating student fees.
The Collegian is one of three campus publications regulated under the Student Federation, with its primary source of funding coming from student fees, allocated for the purpose of improving campus life. The Collegian and Federation have a long-standing relationship and hope to seek better ways to serve the student body in the future.
