Six tracksters spent the first weekend of spring break competing at the national level and brought home All-American honors from the NCAA Division II Indoor Championships.

The highlight of the weekend was sophomore Jared Krout and junior Andrew Dodson being selected for All-American status. Both men qualified for the distinction by placing within the top eight in their respective events.

Krout placed fourth in the 200-meter dash and fifth in the 400-m.

"In two events, Jared Krout scored more points for us than any other athlete in all our time in the NCAA," head coach Bill Lundberg said. "This is his second time as an All-American."

Dodson jumped high enough to clinch sixth place. Lundberg said he came close to making his final attempt at 6 feet 9 inches.

The Hillsdale team made several other worthy efforts against their competition. Freshman Marta Scheiwe, although failing to qualify for finals in her sprint events, said she enjoyed the experience of competing at her first NCAA Championships.

"I was just excited to get to go, especially as a freshman," she said. "It was really cool to see the high level of competition. Just watching all the events was pretty neat."

Lundberg said the entire team deserves recognition for having excelled all season and making it to the championships.

"Our thrower - the guys who maybe didn't do what they wanted to at the national meet - still got lifetime bests this year," he said. "They have nothing to regret."

Fresh from spring break training, the team looks ahead to their outdoor season. The first meet is April 5 at Purdue University.
