The Charger softball team hit a rocky stretch in their season, failing to win even one of their 10 games in Florida over spring break. The team stuck close to their competition, however, and lost four of the games by two runs or less.

The Chargers traveled to St. Petersburg, Tampa, Lake Wales and Lakeland, Fla., March 14 through 19 and returned with a 2-12 record.

"The competition was tough," head coach Jamie Meyers said. "We just didn't play very good defense and we didn't have timely hitting. We [also] had a lot of players playing out of position."

Junior Britt Sevey agreed.

"We just need to clean up our defense and string hits together a little better," Sevey said. "If we do that, we will be fine."

Sevey did well at the plate, hitting 3-3 March 17 against Warner Southern College.
Several other players had success hitting. Sophomore Devon Trimmer and freshman Jordan Kellie hit their first collegiate home runs.

"It felt really great, but it was an in-the-park home run, so I didn't get to walk," Trimmer said. "I didn't know [I had hit a home run] until after."

Trimmer said she felt the tournament showed the team the areas where they needed improvement.

"We need to play a more fast-paced game," Trimmer said. "[On the Florida teams,] even the bigger girls ran fast. The other teams know what they are doing right away - every play - even if something went wrong, they knew what to do with it."

Several players said they enjoyed spending time off the field.

"We short-sheeted Katie Bostis' bed," Trimmer said, laughing. "It was nice just being with everyone in the car and watching people dance who sucked, just like me."

Overall, the team said their experience in Florida will improve their performance.

"We all know what we did wrong we just need to work together as a team and things will happen," Sevey said. "It was frustrating softball-wise, but I do think it will get better."

The team was scheduled to play at the Wayne State Invitational last Saturday but the tournament was postponed due to weather. They travel this weekend to face their first GLIAC opponents Ashland University Saturday and University of Findlay Sunday.
