For the first time since 2003, the Charger women's basketball team plays in the Division II NCAA Tournament tomorrow. The Chargers compete against Quincy University from Illinois, a No. 7 seed with a 19-9 record, in Springfield, Mo.

The Chargers gathered in Phillips Auditorium Sunday evening and watched in anticipation as NCAA officials announced, via online broadcasting, the tournament-qualifying teams.

Hillsdale was the last team announced.

"They saved the best for last," said head coach Claudette Charney Sunday night.

The bracket contains only one other team from the GLIAC, Michigan Technological University. The other six teams, including tomorrow night's competition, Quincy, hail from the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Like the Chargers, Quincy lost in their regional quarterfinals.

"We're excited, it's a good draw for us," Charney said.

Senior Julie Slot is confident they can beat Quincy.

"I think they're a very beatable team," she said. "It's definitely going to be a good game. We're both kind of out to get another win."

Slot said the team worked hard in practice this week and changed their routine to focus on specific goals each practice, such as boxing out and rebounding one day and positive attitudes another.

Junior Claire Aubrey said the Chargers will approach tomorrow's game like they have approached every other game this season - with a winning attitude and a strong defense.

Aubrey said she has been researching and watching film on Quincy. The Charger's strong defense, she said, will be especially important in this game, because Quincy is good at moving the ball and driving to the basket.

Charney said the Great Lakes Region is very tough. There are a lot of unknowns going into tournament play.

If they win in the first round, the Chargers face either Michigan Tech or Missouri University of Science and Technology.

Charney said she saw Missouri S & T play and would be more confident competing against them than Michigan Tech.
