Southern Michigan's snow accumulation has ranked among the top 20 snowiest years, according to the National Weather Service.
The Detroit area has received 70 to 80 inches of snow this year. It usually snows between 30 and 40 inches by early March.
Columbus, Ohio, which usually averages 28 inches per year, received more than 15 inches on Friday.
But meteorologist Jay Berschback from Toledo's ABC News 13 said the last few years have been unusually warm for the Midwest. Consequently, everyone is surprised by the prolonged chilliness this season. He said this winter is like the ones he remembers from his childhood.
Though the inches may be piling and records may be breaking, weather services say this winter is only slightly colder and slightly above normal for rain and snow.
For the rest of March and into the spring season, snow and rain fall should be normal, according to the National Weather Service.
