The Hillsdale College history department hired two new faculty members who will teach this fall.

"These guys are special because they're big names," said Dean of Faculty and History Department Chairman Mark Kalthoff.

Allan Carlson, who holds a doctorate in modern European history from Ohio University, will join the faculty as a full-time professor specializing in the role of the family in history, and will probably carry the title Distinguished Visiting Professor.

Terrence Moore received his doctorate from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and specializes in Enlightenment history. He has been hired as a full-time Assistant Professor of History beginning this fall.

Both new faculty members have visited the college before as guest lecturers for seminars like Center for Constructive Alternatives and the Center for Teacher Excellence.

"They will be a nice complement to what we do here," Kalthoff said. "They're going to fit in very nicely."

In a history department decorated by professors who specialize primarily in American, European and military history, Carlson's emphasis on the family's role in history is particularly interesting, Kalthoff said, because "[Carlson's] focus isn't something we've had much of here at Hillsdale."

Carlson is the creator and president of The Howard Center, a non-profit research center focused on the natural family in Rockford, Ill., and has published 10 books and lectured all over the world, Kalthoff said.

Last week Carlson was named one of the "Most Influential Christian Leaders of 2007" by the Christian Telegraph, a Russian-language news agency. He shares the honor with the U.S. evangelist Joyce Meyer, CBN president Pat Robertson and Dr. Franklin Graham, among others.

Carlson has been hired as a full-time faculty member, but while most faculty teach a total of six courses during the school year, divided between the two semesters, Carlson will devote more time than normal for full-time faculty to research, writing, and speaking engagements. Consequently, he will teach three courses, one in the fall and two in the spring semester.

His course this fall is titled, "The Natural Family in Western Political and Cultural Thought," which, according to the course description, "will examine over time the treatment of the institution of the family in Western religious and political thought."

Carlson said he picked Hillsdale because he believes it is a unique institution with "serious students and serious faculty" who still appreciate and are committed to the pursuit of what Russell Kirk called "the permanent things."

"I felt it was time to do some teaching and get back into the classroom," he said. "I started originally planning to be a full-time college teacher and professor but got diverted three decades ago doing other things."

Carlson's contract with the college is for one year at first, Kalthoff said, "But if things go well, there may be a conversation about staying."

Moore served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and as assistant professor of history at Ashland University in Ohio until he founded the chartered Ridgeview Classical Schools in Colorado, ranked No. 1 in two consecutive years by the Colorado Department of Education. He has served as founding principal for seven years. Because of that experience, Moore will be valuable not only to the history department, but also as he is likely to lend his expertise to the Center for Teacher.

"It was a strategic hiring, in that he can help with that," Kalthoff said. "He knows all about education and school reform from the inside out."

Carlson and Moore are among the first of several faculty hires the college has completed for next year. The Collegian reported last week on the mathematics department's recent acquisition of Ryan Hutchinson from Bemidji State University in Minnesota.

The provost's office is still in the process of hiring a new political science professor, and negotiations are going on for new faculty in the finance and forensics departments, Kalthoff said.

In addition, the biology department recently hired Jeffery Van Zant, and the English department has hired another professor.
