Williams said the birds sometimes take flight if someone closes a car door loudly near them.
Crows are especially hard to study, Bartlett said, because they regularly work their way out of traps.
"They're hard to catch because they're so smart," he said. "It's almost impossible to catch them. I've tried."
Eric Southwell, a cook the Hunt Club, said he is afraid of getting pooped on when he walks beneath the trees they roost in.
Williams said she hears the crows at night as well and does not know why they come to the same group of trees during certain times of the year.
Bartlett said the crows may be in the city for a long time.
"They are seasonally loyal to one area," he said.
Downtown residents are in awe of the number of birds that come and go from the courthouse.
"The sky is black, there are so many of them," Williams said of their daily departure.
Fittingly, the birds were in town last week during the Alfred Hitchcock Center for Constructive Alternatives seminar. Hitchcock's hit film, "The Birds," did not show during the CCA.
