Bundled up in his coat and hat, poised at the top of a hill, an 8-year-old boy prepares to snowboard to the melody of the cheers of his mentors, his "big brothers."

Meet Zach Massey, son of Dow Center employee Amy Massey, and "little brother" to senior David Kern and junior David Stehlik.

Every week, Kern and Stehlik get together with Zach to play games, study a Bible story or simply spend time together.

A couple weeks ago, they snowboarded on the hill next to Galloway Hall. Last week they played with Zach's Matchbox cars in the Grewcock Student Union.

"I have over 500 cars," Zach says. "I don't have any names [for them]."

His favorite is the one with wheels that light up.

Stehlik suggests it is time to name it.

"How about 'The Skull'?" he says.

"Nah," Zack replies.

"'Excalibur?' 'The Spear?'"

"Nah."

"Zack Attack?"

"YEAH!"

"I'm Zack, and I'm gonna attack," Zack says, excited about the name choice.

Zach is involved with Cub Scouts, plays basketball and plays defense in soccer.
"I'm like a pro," he says.

Zach recently started taking guitar lessons from senior Jason Custer. He says he enjoys the lessons.

He's also a budding inventor. One of his ideas is the Excel Charger - an invention that will let a car become invisible, run on water and run "faster than one thousand-million miles without letting the car crash."

Zack isn't sure yet what he wants to be when he grows up.

"I don't know. Still choosing between inventor, a professional rock star and a professional snowboarder," he says.

Although both Kern and Stehlik have been involved with the Big Brothers, Big Sisters volunteer program, Zach is their own personal commitment.

"I just wanted to help him out," Kern says.

Kern and Stehlik's friend Dave Schefke, says of the relationship: "[Kern and Stehlik] are really important for [Zach]. They are good spiritual leaders, fun, charismatic and an overall good package."
