Last weekend, the women's softball team finished 2-2 at Charleston, W. Va., playing against the University of Charleston and West Virginia State University.
Head coach Jamie Meyers said she was happy with how the games turned out, especially considering the team played indoors so far this season, not hitting the dirt till last Sunday.
"[We're] a little rusty, but I think it's a hopeful start," junior Ellen Eldridge said, who chalked up her first career save against Charleston.
After weather postponed Saturday's scheduled game, the team played two doubleheaders Sunday and Monday. The Chargers lost 2-1 and 7-5 Sunday against West Virginia State, but won 7-6 and 4-2 against Charleston Monday.
Although the team pitched and hit well, they found trouble with their defense, making eight errors in three games.
"This week, we're probably going to be doing all defensive practice," Meyers said, claiming her first career win as head coach Monday afternoon.
Monday against Charleston senior Katie Botsis found success at the plate, hitting a home run as her first run of the season.
"I was happy to get a hit after fouling off a lot of pitches and having to make the pitcher work," Bostis said.
One of the most memorable moments of the weekend was when junior Alyssa Grewcock hit a ball into a triple play.
Junior Dana Gould had a successful weekend, going 3-4 on Monday in the first game with a double and two singles, and 2-3 in the second game with a triple and a single. She led the team with a .545 batting average.
"I guess I've just been working hard to try and achieve on the field," Gould said. "It was just a good weekend."
Junior Jamie Vandenburgh earned her first win since 2006 against Charleston on Monday. She said she felt the weekend went well overall.
"It felt good to go up there and get a win and I felt great abut the way our team played this weekend, especially it being our first time out on dirt and not in the gym," Vandenburgh said.
