"I was impressed more than anything by the play of freshmen," Molter said.
The team swept the Wheeling Jesuit University Cardinals Friday, putting up 20 runs in the doubleheader. Senior Joe Schoonover and junior Scott Monterastelli picked up the wins. Krebs and catcher Alex Kidman, a senior, hit homeruns, and Hubbard went 4-for-5 in game one.
In game one, the Cardinals scored seven runs in the first two innings but Charger pitching shut them down, allowing only two for the rest of the game.
"The defense really stepped up and made a lot of plays to help out," Schoonover said of game one.
Center fielder Adam Connell, a freshman, had eight hits in six games. He said veteran players did a good job of preparing freshmen.
"It was a blast," freshman infielder Jamie McNeill said.
McNeill said his first college games meant a quicker pace, new hitting challenges and faster groundballs. He said he'll continue to work on hitting to the opposite field.
Lovell said upon returning to Michigan, the Chargers will begin working on throwing and covering runners, something that troubled them against the Pumas.
"We haven't been able to go outside much so we couldn't work on that stuff," Lovell said. "We'll try and focus on small ball."
Also over the weekend, the GLIAC Preseason Baseball Coaches' Poll placed the Chargers seventh of nine teams.
Head coach Paul Noce said the ranking was expected.
"But our goal is going to be in the top four, and I think we're going to surprise some people," he said Tuesday.
Noce said the 2003 squad was ranked ninth in the poll, but finished fourth.
The Chargers play Bellarmine University March 8 and 9 in Louisville, Ky. The team heads back to Florida from March 13-19, where they'll play seven games and enjoy the weather - something they didn't do the first trip because of a tight schedule.
