The Hillsdale College baseball team is 4-2 after opening weekend in Florida.
Players spoke by phone Sunday night, citing solid pitching, impressive play by freshmen and offensive power from junior Brandon Hubbard as keys to their wins.
The team swept the Wheeling Jesuit University Cardinals on Friday, putting up 20 runs in the doubleheader. Senior Joe Schoonover and junior Scott Monterastelli picked up the wins. Sophomore transfer Pat Krebs and senior catcher Alex Kidman hit homeruns, and Hubbard went 4-5 in the first game.
The team beat the Lewis University Flyers Saturday, capitalizing on Flyers' mistakes, assistant coach Andy Lovell ('05) said.
The team beat the Gannon University Golden Knights Sunday, thanks in part to 2 1/3 innings pitched by freshman Dan Rhodes in relief of senior Tom Molter.
"I was impressed more than anything by the play of freshman," Molter said.
Center fielder Adam Connell, a freshman, had six hits in eight games. He said veteran players did a good job of preparing freshman.
"It was a blast," freshman infielder Jamie McNeill said.
The Chargers fell twice Sunday to the Saint Joseph's College Pumas. Lovell said the team was fatigued from weekend play.
"They made plays today and balls got hit right to them," Molter said of the Pumas. "They just got every break."
Despite getting the loss in game one, senior Noah Turner had four strikeouts and allowed no earned runs in a complete game performance.
Also over the weekend, the GLIAC Preseason Baseball Coaches' Poll placed the Chargers seventh of nine teams.
Molter and Turner said Saint Joseph's was the best team they faced and, despite the losses, they'll take the four wins.
"We can play with anybody," Molter said. "If we can eliminate our mistakes we can compete."
The Chargers play Bellarmine University March 8 and 9 in Louisville, Ky. Read complete Charger coverage in Thursday's print edition.
