Hillsdale College's Rockwell Lake Lodge is combining with Relay for Life and Saga Catering Services to host this year's Soup 'n Chili Cook-off on March 6.
From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the public and lodge managers will judge a dozen soups and deserts in a competition. The winners will be offered a two night stay in the newly built lodge, which opens June 1.
Students can participate by either making food or simply attending. Those who attend automatically enter the raffle for the grand prize of a weekend at the lodge.
Last year, the event raised $400 for the American Cancer Society, but organizers expect even more with the help of the lodge, said Cheryl Clawson, staff assistant for internal affairs.
"We're hoping to get more [people] with bigger prizes and Rockwell Lodge joining us," she said.
Lodge management said they became involved to boost interest in the lodge.
"Our team is trying to think of ways to create some excitement for the lodge with the [campus] staff," said LuAnn Trombly, one of the lodge managers.
Those who win the cook-off will be some of the first to experience the new lodge, located within the college's biostation in Luther, Mich.
"I love it up there," Trombly said. "It's absolutely beautiful. It's so tranquil."
The lodge has 10 suites, and will be a quiet getaway with luxury accommodations for vacationers and small businesses, Trombly said. It is open to anyone.
Trombly and her husband, Jerry, will move to the lodge in two weeks to prepare it for habitation. They will meet people in the local community and explore nearby locations to be ready for patron questions, she said.
Patrons will also be able to taste the winning chilies and deserts, which will be featured at the lodge, Trombley said.
Trombly said they hope to be involved in future Relay for Life events.
Those interested in participating in the cook-off may call Clawson at 517-607-2601.
