MeLCat down for a day

The Michigan Electronic Libraries Catalog (MeLCat) will be offline on Feb. 27 for Hillsdale College. The program will undergo a software upgrade. Public Services Librarian Linda Moore said that students will be unable to make new mailing requests that day, but can pick up previously ordered items normally.
Beta testing of the new MeLCat software is also expected to cause momentary slowness or lagging, but should only persist for a day or two, Moore said. She said that little serious trouble is expected following the system upgrade.
"For the most part the system seems very good," she says.
MeLCat also suffered minor technical difficulties on Monday. The glitch, which blocked confirmation of book orders from outside the library, has already been fixed with no delays for pre-existing orders.
"People could place requests but no confirmation of the orders would come from Lansing," Moore said. "It basically makes for a little bit more work in checking out books here."
Moore says that the problem started when the ITS firewall accidentally deleted the IP address for MeLCat. Without a fixed IP address on Hillsdale's Internet servers, book orders could be approved but no confirmation of the order's success could be sent.
