Moms aid flu-sick ill
Joseph McCleary
Issue date: 1/31/08 Section: Opinion
This was my first sickness away from home. I woke up one morning and surprise -there was a prickle in my throat. Not thinking much of it, I headed to class with the attitude that got me through high school: I can tough this one out.
I was wrong. Heading back to the dorm, a bone-weariness set in. The next four days I spent in bed with hot sweats and all the other pleasantries that come with a nasty flu.
I had not been sick in seven years, and I had forgotten how much I need others' help. Especially when I am incapable - which we all are, or will be, at some point in our lives.
Well, these past four days jolted my ungratefulness. First off, thank you, Mom. It was really comforting as a kid to have you around when sick, especially for the back rubbing and emotional support. Of course, it's only with your absence that I've truly come to appreciate it. But better late than never, I hope. So thanks, Mom.
Secondly, I would like to personally thank my house mom, Mrs. K and RAs - Aaron Hommel and Jon Thomson - for all their help and assistance. They were an outstanding "in loco parentis" (in place of parent) while at Galloway. For all the criticism they get, concerned house moms and RAs are a real comfort in time of need. I'm sure other students - especially the ones who've been sick at Hillsdale - feel the same way. So thank you RAs and house moms.
