Hillsdale Weekly: Changes and glitches

Hillsdale has been refining its image lately. Changes-from a new font to a new union- have honed Hillsdale's purposeful reputation.

All this goes to establish a new, cohesive brand identity for Hillsdale. The new font will speak well of our college, even before a reader has the chance to piece the Minion characters into a word.

The student union was a much-needed upgrade.

The cafeteria atmosphere dupes students into believing the food is different-a psychological phenomenon we'll embrace. And even if the Saga uniforms and hats are a little embarrassing, the sentiment remains. Hillsdale is improving, and the students benefit from it.

The stories told at the dedication ceremony help us appreciate the sacrifices made for these improvements.

But with changes come at least a few unavoidable glitches.

The lunch line this week seemed infinite. Undoubtedly, the wait will improve as cafeteria employees settle into their new environment. Another kink is the music played in the union- a boggling mix of super-pop and Star Wars soundtracks. Hopefully, union managers will continue to listen to student suggestions and tweak the lineup to fit the students' taste. But this, too, takes time.

Yet a lot has improved. The new café helps fill the Starbucks void and gives students a great place to mix studying and socializing. Laptops instead of a computer lab encourage a more casual, friendly environment, knitting together the student body. Money added to our ID cards helps even the broke enjoy a much-needed cup of joe.

New regulations about fliers keep the space looking clean and professional. A message system soon to be launched on all the TV screens around the union will present information without the paper clutter. Hopefully, events promoters can use venues like Facebook or online posting boards to draw crowds to our beautiful new building.

The new union can be christened by traditions conceived by the students. Other colleges tag sculptures, giving them a pat for good luck.

We suggest students get lucky by passing the bronze Winston Churchill statue and giving the upstanding citizen a stroke before entering the union.
