Thompson withdraws from presidential race

After finishing third place in the South Carolina primary, Republican Fred Thompson dropped out of the presidential race Jan. 22. John McCain, Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani and Mike Huckabee remain, squaring off for the Republican ticket.

"I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort," he said in a statement on his Web site.

"Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people."
