The women's basketball team won their first GLIAC game against Ashland University 65-45 Wednesday night.

A continuing focus on a strong defense allowed the team to win the game, senior Julie Slot said.

"That's been our goal pretty much every game," Slot said. "It's always something we really focus on."

Head Coach Claudette Charney said a strong defense is the team's forte.

"It has to be the backbone of our team," she said. "That doesn't change. We must continue to get better individually."

The game against Ashland was the first of the team's conference play. Slot said she didn't think Ashland was a harder team to beat than those they've played so far this season.

This Saturday the team will take on Saginaw Valley State University at 1 p.m.

"They have a pretty good freshman center who's pretty good," Slot said of Saginaw. "I think it will be a good game."

Charney said Saginaw is not a very deep team but the five players they always play are good.

The team will continue to focus on a good strong defense while improving small parts of their game.

"Basketball is a game of match-ups," Charney said. "You can't compare one game to the next. Every game is different."

Player Highlights:

Katie Cezat: 19 points, 13 rebounds
Julie Slot: 17 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists
Brooke Knight: 4 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals
