The Collegian Weekly: Finals week visitation hours hinders positive group study
Issue date: 11/29/07 Section: Opinion
Groups facilitate studying during final exams, so dorms must stop decreasing visitation hours during finals week.
The house mothers, acting on the advice of the residents assistants, can choose to cut in-house time.
Previously, some dorms' visitation has been hacked down.
This hurts students instead of helping them. Many work better when they study with classmates. But because everyone must desperately cram that week, the library is packed. Every classroom in Lane or Kendall already hosts a study group, and students who usually invite their cohorts over find themselves displaced and alone. If anything, dorm overseers should lengthen the hours during finals week, not cut them.
Likewise, study groups must behave respectfully in the dorms. While few have the time to make real mischief, students must be considerate of those who study better alone.
