Junior Tony Gugino, captain of the men's basketball team, stole the show Friday night at Midnight Madness by launching over a fellow student in the dunking contest. The event, hosted by the Spirit Club, was held for the first time in Roche Sports Complex packing in students and community members.

The Spirit Club put a new spin on preseason pep rallies by involving the community.

"The goal is to introduce the men's and women's basketball teams to both the school and city community in an exciting way," said senior and Spirit Club President Anna Ashmore.

Junior Ryan Walsh opened the night by regaling the audience with a Hillsdale College rap, and senior Cody Strecker served as master of ceremonies. The level of entertainment ran high.

"I'm excited to be here and support my friends and see them strut their stuff," said sophomore Katie Hunt.

None of the night's activities produced more "strutting" than the dunking contest, won by Gugino. Forward Tim Homan, a senior, said the dunk contest brought with it the kind of excitement the teams hope to give to the fans at each game this season.

The basketball frenzy began with a 15 minute scrimmage between the blue team and the white team - composed of the men's and women's team members. It started with matching three-point baskets, and Homan pumped up the crowd with an alley-oop dunk and an unassisted throw-down.

Assistant men's coach Daniel Evans said the audience's excitement was a welcome encouragement.

"I think the main objective is to get the student body involved in our program - let them know we represent the school as a whole," he said.

Spirit Club gave away over 150 T-shirts and other basketball apparel. Three raffle drawings selected winners of other apparel, and a fourth drawing gave two participants a chance to knock down a half-court shot to win $500 toward books at the bookstore next semester.

Ashmore said she believes the Spirit Club succeeded in lifting the school's "overall spirit" through Midnight Madness.

Isn't this the same event hosted in the sports complex by the basketball team for many years? I'm confused as to why the Collegian is portraying this event as a new, innovative idea of Anna Ashmore and the Spirit Club, when it's an event that I remember happening each year when I was a student.
