The game started off with a charge from forward Tim Homan, a senior. On Hillsdale's first possession Homan scored with a put-back dunk. He followed it up on the ensuing possession with a crafty lay-in to put the Chargers up 4-0. Though the Chargers had a strong stance in the first minutes, Homan said the team couldn't direct their energy properly.
"In the first half we came out solid with energy," he said. "We just got a little too hyped up - we'd get steals on defense and then turn it over."
Head coach John Tharp said his team fouled too much early in the game.
Despite mistakes, the Chargers kept the lead going into halftime with a score of 32-28.
The second half started with a combined six fouls in the first three minutes from both teams. Hillsdale gained composure and turned the match into a lopsided affair with yet another spark from Homan. He started a 24-4 run for the Chargers to end the game by sinking three three-pointers in a row. The team never looked back.
"The main thing was we just needed to calm down," he said.
Tharp said Homan is a vital member on the team.
"He's going to have to carry this basketball team at times," Tharp said. "His teammates look for him. They understand how great of an offensive player he is."
Though happy with the solid play throughout most of the second half, Tharp said the team could have executed the game plan better.
"Our whole approach with the team last night was to throw 'body punches' to wear people down," he said. "We tried to throw the knock-out punch too early."
The Chargers head into their regular season opener against Bellarmine University tonight in Louisville, Ky. The men will face Ferris State University Saturday and University of Indianapolis in their first home game of the regular season Monday at 7 p.m.
