Eclectic, acoustic

Dim yellow lights and the mingled smell of coffee, monkey bread and fading varnish set the mood as people trickled into the Mauck Solarium Saturday night. Coming in from light snow, they threw themselves on couches and cushions around the room.
The music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha hosted Storytellers, a music event focused on acoustic song writing and the stories behind the music. It was a showcase of personal talent in the wake of the group efforts of Battle of the Bands.
"We chose Mauck because we wanted it to be personal, homey," junior Patrick Masterson said. "Plus we wanted a lot of girls to come, and this is a girls dorm. But mostly because it's homey."
The brainchild of Masterson, and the result of sophomore Ben Newman's work, the event hosted more than 60 people at its peak. Nine different artists played guitar, keyboard and violin; complimentary coffee and pastries were consumed.
"I think it's a good turn out. There's a good mellow crowd here," said senior Josh Peterson, the first artist to play. "It's different than a coffee house where everyone is socializing. This way everybody's more receptive. They're more of an audience for you. It's very nice."
