The Hillsdale College Republicans will host a rally tonight as the culmination of a week-long effort by at least 30 campus organizations to amass a bevy of packages to send to troops overseas.
Representatives for the Mitt Romney and Duncan Hunter campaigns and United States Marine Aaron Hummel, a senior, will speak at the event.
Alicia Bruns '06, who is a program coordinator for Freedom Alliance, a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring the military, said College Republicans secretary senior Kara Silberhorn contacted her earlier this semester and requested assistance in hosting a "support our troops" event.
Bruns said she recalled significant student interest in such events during her time at Hillsdale.
"The College Republicans have been wanting to do this for a number of years - even when I was a student [at Hillsdale], so this is kind of a dream come true for a lot of people," Bruns said.
As soon as she was given the OK, Silberhorn contacted every student organization and faculty member, requesting either care packages or a donation of $51 to cover the cost and shipment of a single package.
Senior Brenna Henry, secretary of Lambda Iota Tau literature honorary, said she is involved with several groups that are working to assemble packages.
Henry, who is contributing packages from her Bible study, the literature honorary and her dorm, said the most common items are food such as peanut butter, tuna, popcorn and jerky. But other random things get tossed in as well - socks, for instance.
"I'm trying to get each group to go with a theme, like books for the LIT honorary and maybe a few small Bibles from the Bible study group," Henry said.
Silberhorn said she estimates that at least 30 packages are currently accounted for, but anticipates more will be added at the rally. She said Walmart is also contributing food items.
"With the contributions from the community, we are expecting around 50 or so," Silberhorn said.
Bruns said the role of Freedom Alliance is to keep such events organized and raise funds from the community.
"[It's] stuff your average college student doesn't have time to do," she said.
Freedom Alliance was founded by retired Col. Oliver North. According to the group's Web site, the mission of Freedom Alliance is to "advance the American heritage of freedom by honoring and encouraging military service, defending the sovereignty of the United States and promoting a strong national defense."
Members of Hillsdale's College Republicans will haul the mass of care packages to the Hillsdale post office Friday morning to be shipped to soldiers serving in Iraq.
The event will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Knorr Room.
