The women's basketball team competed against the Division I University of Notre Dame in an exhibition game Monday night. Despite losing 96-64, the team played well, head coach Claudette Charney said.
"It was an experience our players will never forget," she said.
Charney said the team performed well in certain areas of the game. They had two more assists than the Irish and out shot them at the free throw line, ending up at 78 percent.
Charney said it will be key throughout the season for the team to continue working on
shooting from the free throw line.
"They are more physical, quicker, faster and bigger, but I thought we stayed with them," Charney said Notre Dame.
Team captain Julie Slot, a senior, said the Chargers performed well, despite not knowing what to expect from a large Division I team.
"It was really intimidating," Slot said. "But we definitely improved throughout the game
and really picked up our game."
"We knew we had to play perfectly to make it extremely close," Charney said. "We had to do the little things like boxing out and rebounding."
Charney said Slot will have to be a team leader this season and share experience with younger players.
Slot said she and the other three team captains - juniors Katie Eckinger, Claire Aubrey and Katie Cezat - each bring different leadership skills to the team and together make a good leadership group.
Sophomore Janay Miller, a guard, had a team-high of five assists along with seven points. Charney said she looks to Miller to be a double-figure scorer this year.
Attention to detail is something the team will continue to focus on this season, Slot said.
"It's the little things that get the big things done," she said. "Everything else kind of falls into place."
The team's biggest competitors this year will be Michigan Technological University, Grand Valley State University and Ferris State University in the north and Gannon University, Ashland University, and Wayne State University in the south, Charney said.
"We have to use the preseason to work on our fundamentals," she said. "If we can do that, we have a chance to be pretty good."
The team also needs to have a sound defensive philosophy and an aggressive offense to succeed this season, Charney said.
Next, the team will take on West Virginia Wesleyan College at the Shippensburg Tournament in Pennsylvania Nov. 16 and 17.
"We're taking it day by day, week by week, month by month," Charney said.
