The Chargers suffered defeat in their final game against Saginaw Valley State University 21-24, snapping their run of home victories and ending a playoff run.

Within the first 30 seconds of the first quarter the Cardinals struck with a touchdown. Shortly after, they slammed the Chargers with a field goal followed by a 96-yard touchdown. Heading into the second the Chargers faced a 17-point deficit.

The first quarter held a series of missed opportunities for Charger offense, including dropped passes and a missed 28-yard field goal by Mark Petro.

But student fans were still hopeful.

"I feel like at first the team needed to come together," senior Steven Hann said at the start of the second quarter. "It has been one mistake to another but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised when we win this football game."

The Chargers scored their first touchdown in the second quarter and the defense kept the Cardinals from the end zone.

In the third, Saginaw upped their score to 24-7. The Chargers closed the gap with two touchdowns. Despite a late-game drive, the Chargers failed to convert a fourth-down pass. Saginaw pushed two first downs before running out the clock.

The Chargers finished 7-3 in the GLIAC and 8-3 overall for the season. Though they missed their goal of the playoffs fans acknowledge the season was still a success.

"They really had a great season overall," freshman Vytas Reivydas said.
