Matt Macaulay's Myspace artist(s) of the week
Matt Macaulay
Issue date: 11/8/07 Section: Arts
I'm back with more recommendations from the wasteland of MySpace.
Today I recommend Ari Hest, Jessie Baylin, Free the Robots, and Tofer Brown.
Ari Hest writes some pretty good music. His vocals remind me of Nickelback and Bruce Springsteen.
Now, that probably sounds like something you don't want to listen to, but for this guy, it actually works. On his song "When and If," he almost channels Johnny Cash in his vocal delivery. He just has a very dynamic musical range, and he's great to listen to while you're studying.
If you haven't heard Jessie Baylin, you're really missing out. Go to her MySpace page and listen to "Leave Your Mark" and try to not get hooked.
She reminds me of the sultry lower register of Joni Mitchell mixed with the smooth voice of Diana Krall. She also sounds very much like Brandi Carlisle.
If you dig alternative folk with great vocals and great instrumentation, you will love some Jessie Baylin.
Free the Robots are a strange electronic group. They classify themselves as Psychedelic Jazz Electronica.
Their song "Jazzhole" combines an electric rhythm with jazz piano and a good thumping bass. Somehow they've made the norms of jazz go a little haywire, and they came out with a pretty individual sound.
They are also the first group I'm recommending that do not feature a prominent singer at all, just club music and house electronica.
Check them out, especially if you're a fan of bands like Daft Punk or the Wiseguys.
If you like Howie Day's old album, "Australia," or you like vintage Pete Yorn, you'll really like Tofer Brown. His song "Someone to Love" is a great track with a fantastic simplicity to it.
When you throw it on, you get engulfed in his music, even though there's nothing very complex going on.
It is obvious Tofer Brown really loves his music and that he expresses a specific viewpoint.
So, another week, another personal battle with the horror that is MySpace.
I suggest gritting your teeth and fighting through for Ari Hest, Jessie Baylin, Free the Robots, and Tofer Brown. You'll like what you hear.
I did.
