Man up about porn
Mary Petrides
Issue date: 10/11/07 Section: Opinion
I'm a freshman, and perhaps I was a bit naive to think that Hillsdale guys are necessarily trustworthy, courteous, and kind; that Hillsdale guys are necessarily clean.
But porn? It's reasonable to assume, based on fliers and student clubs, that most Hillsdale students vote pro-family, pro-life, pro-God-in-the-pledge-of-allegiance. (Or am I being naive again?)
This makes porn hypocritical, in addition to being generally disgusting, weak and barbaric. Men of Hillsdale, you can do better than this.
Often I've heard girls complain that guys only care about sex. Often I've heard guys complain that girls think guys only care about sex.
If you watch porn, you have no right to be offended.
Maybe you look at porn and you care about non-sexual things, like steak, football, and video games. Maybe you care about history, your GPA, or finding a job.
But if you watch porn, it's very difficult to believe that you can see much more than sex in a girl.
And if that's all you see, you're missing out.
What angers me most about porn is that it dehumanizes women; it gives the impression that sex is infinitely more important than anything else women can do or be.
Obviously you value women who are physically attractive. Do you also value women who are intelligent and studious?
Browse through a magazine with pictures of girls reading. Do you value women who attend the same church you do?
Take your camera with you on Sunday and get some nice, if stalker-ish, shots of girls with long skirts and songbooks after the 9 a.m. service. Do you value women who have similar interests as you?
Feast your eyes on photos of women debating or writing or watching TV or playing football.
Do you value women for something other than sex?
Prove it. Surrendering to pornography reveals a pathetic weakness. Men of Hillsdale, you can do better than this.
