Hillsdale College will welcome parents from across the country this weekend for its annual Fall Parent Weekend.

From Friday through Sunday afternoon, parents can attend events designed to acquaint them with the college. Activities include a wine tasting class, the Hillsdale vs. Wayne
State University football game and parent-faculty conferences.

Kimberly Gehrke, a parent relations office staff assistant, said on Saturday that at least 700 parents will attend conferences with faculty, 500 will attended a parent luncheon and over 100 will enjoy a wine tasting.

Associate Professor of German Terry Reisch said conferences are a chance to meet parents and to see old friends, he said.

"I have a couple different sets of parents whom I'm seeing for the third or fourth time," Reisch said.

He said he expects to meet with about twenty-five to thirty sets of parents on Saturday.
While some parents are veterans of Parent Weekend, others are visiting campus for the first time. Gehrke said she hopes that events like a parent mixer Friday night will help new visitors build ties with others from across the country.

Some students who don't see their parents often said they're anticipating the weekend. Senior Vicci Yau's mother will fly six hours from Honolulu, Hawaii, to the west coast on her way to Hillsdale for her first Parent Weekend visit since Yau's freshman year.

"I don't get to see her from summer until Christmas time," Yau said. "It's my last year, too."

After months of planning the weekend, Gehrke said she's excited to meet parents.

"We don't get a lot of traffic here through our office," Gehrke said, "So I'm looking forward to meeting a lot of the parents that I've been corresponding with."

Many parents arrived last Sunday to participate in the annual fall Phon-A-Thon, which began Monday and runs through today. The money raised will support the Independence Fund and the new Grewcock Student Union.
