As the semester progresses and stress levels increase, many freshman worry about the "inevitable"?freshmen 15.
According to the September 2003 issue of FDA Consumer magazine, unsaturated fats are beneficial when consumed in moderation, while saturated and trans fats are not.
At Hillsdale College, almost every dish students eat is prepared from scratch, said Kevin Kirwan, Saga Inc. General Manager. The meals are made with fresh ingredients, he said.
Saga nutritionist Debbie Williams said eating small portions is key to eating healthy.
"You should try to limit yourself to one portion of anything that is processed or fried or high calorie," Williams said.
"When I see the fried turkey cutlet or tater-tot casserole, I just put a small portion on the side of my plate and go for salad or something lower calorie for my main dish."
Sophomores Michelle Ashdown and Stacey McGregor said they try to stay away from the main dishes in Saga.
"I really try to avoid the entrees," McGregor said. "They don't look good and they are probably really bad for you."
Both girls said they usually eat salad, but it leads to dissatisfying dining experiences, they said.
More salad bar options would enhacne the mealtime experience, they said.
