The Hillsdale College art department is hosting Speak!, a display of dog-themed children's book illustrations, in the Daughtrey Gallery from Sept. 7 through Oct. 6.

The display comes from the Mazza Museum in Findley, Ohio, which collects original works of art from children's books. Styles range from realistic drawings and paintings to cartoons and folk art in a variety of media.

Mazza Museum Education Coordinator Terry Olthouse, parent of junior Jodi Olthouse and freshman Will Olthouse, introduced art department chairman Sam Knecht to the Mazza.

Knecht said he invited the multimedia exhibit to Hillsdale because it represents a wide range of artists and is much different from other art shows displayed throughout the year.

Artworks in the Speak! exhibit come from a book of the same title for which 30 illustrators contibuted art and stories about their own dogs. The book is a philanthropic effort for the welfare of animals.

The opening reception on Sept. 9 will showcase the work of Aaron Zenz '98, author and illustrator of Hiccupotomus. Zenz will speak on children's book development and production, then demonstrate his newest character illustration which will appear in his future NASCAR-themed book.
