Ten campus bands are gearing up to play in this year's Battle of the Bands. Two of them won't make it past the auditions. The fourth annual Battle of the Bands, co-hosted by Phi Mu Alpha and Pi Beta Phi, will be held Nov. 14. And this year for the first time due to time constraints and lots of bands signing up they'll have to audition. (0) comments

Campus Cooks: Ralph Biddle

Not everyone can say they learned from four-star French chefs. Junior Ralph Biddle can. Biddle learned to cook by watching the chefs at his father's French cafe when he was a little boy. His father, the elder Ralph Biddle, said the younger Biddle would run around the restaurant waiting on tables, working the cash register, and watching the chefs work. (0) comments

Music brings faculty together after hours

"Keep it nice and bright," jazz program director Chris McCourry directs the other members of the faculty jazz quintet. It's Thursday night and they're rehearsing their closing number one last time. Discussions of the music itself or friendly banter can't break their concentration, even as laughter rings out across the fluorescent lighting of the studio. (0) comments

Hillsdale College's faculty jazz quintet will be giving two performances of their Tribute to Anita O'Day concert on Nov. 5 and 6. Hillsdale High School will feature the group on the evening of the fifth. The show starts at 7 p.m. with a $3 admission charge to benefit the high school's band program. (0) comments

The only rule in the House of Representatives is that there no rules - at least, none that directly apply to Joe DeMarco. In Mike Lawson's third Joe DeMarco thriller, "House Rules," Lawson does not disappoint. The book contains an abundance of believable, flawed characters responding to the extraordinary situations only the District of Columbia enjoys providing on a regular basis. (0) comments
