Electronic eyes are watching you. In the past several years, the college has placed multiple surveillance cameras throughout campus and plans to install more. Every building built or refurbished within the last five years has motion activated surveillance cameras at its entry points, Director of Security Mike Wertz said. (1) comment

Hillsdale College holds convocation 11 a.m. today at College Baptist Church. During the ceremony, the college will announce academic accomplishments across campus. The Daugherty Award for Teaching Excellence went to Professor of German Eberhard Geyer. The top ten seniors from the class of 2008 are: Jeremy Vryhof, Laura Calderone, Kira Landenberger, Jessica Gannon, Aliza Kwiatek, Esther Terry, Kjerstin Ostlind, Jessica Degnan, Matthew McCorkle and Caitlin Baron. The prospect of receiving a federal Economic Stimulus Payment has dozens of Hillsdale city residents requesting help filing their tax returns at the Community Action Agency on Barnard Street, Community Resource Specialist Sara Hutchins said. A student-run Facebook group advocating burning books the group calls "unhealthy to community" continues to stir controversy since its creation in September. Already, the group has burned two Masonic Bibles. Entitled "'Tis a Shame So Many Books Go Unburned," the group takes a "decidedly Catholic church position faithful to the longstanding tradition of maintaining the peace and stability of a particular society," said freshman Charles Le Jeune, the group's founder. Hillsdale College students must no longer obtain a parent's signature for off-campus housing permission. Now the deans' offices will send parents a copy of the letter awarding off-campus permission to students as well as a copy of the contract. Dean of Women Diane Philipp said the contract forms contain some revised language and are "pretty much the same, only parents don't have to sign them now. (0) comments

The Hillsdale College admissions office is predicting another record of more selective admission rates and increasing test scores for this fall's incoming class, Director of Admissions Jeff Lantis said last week. "The continual goal in admission is to attain our application goal each year so that we can become more selective and attain a better class each year," Lantis said. (0) comments

Yet Imprimis, the monthly speech digest of Hillsdale College, has earned itself a name. It also suffers from a lack of dirty fingernails, or so says Dennis Mansfield, a blogger from Boise, Idaho. Low enrollment threatens Physics class

Assistant Professor of Physics Cyrill Slezak will bring a program to area grade and high school teachers this summer, hoping to educate them in new techniques of teaching science. "One of the main things that interested me was the inquiry approach to teaching science," said Les Traxler, a fourth-grade teacher at Geir Elementary School. (0) comments

Performance stages on campus have quadrupled in the last two decades. The number of concerts and plays has increased by dozens. But fine arts faculty say it's getting harder to slot every desired show by year's end. "It's really quite a juggling act to get all the Arts Performance Series, concerts, plays, the dance troupe and solo events scheduled," said Sage Building Manager Ruth Demkowski. (0) comments

Kicking off Math Awareness Month with the theme "What makes your vote matter," the math department held its first ever Integration Bee and will host a plethora of math-related events to raise campus awareness of mathematics. Student Federation granted a club status request by the Sticks and Strings Fiber Arts Club, granted $750 to Hillsdale Christian Fellowship, and $1,500 for a new multi-use dance floor in partnership with the administration. In other news, the federation approved next year's major budget concerns, and elected sophomore Andrew Cureton to replace current federation secretary, Benjamin Nygaard, a junior, who will be in Washington, D. Next year's senior class officers were announced Tuesday evening. Ryan Walsh will serve as president; Sofia Juncadella as Vice President; Mary Dell as secretary; Mary Beth Maxfield as treasurer; Evan Aue as social chair; and Craig Kreinbihl and Meagan Drew as ambassadors. (0) comments

The Hillsdale City Council voted 9-0 in favor of allowing North Manning Street to become a two-way street Monday night. The three blocks between Bacon Street and Michigan-99 have been the major point of contention between local businesses and the city council. (0) comments

On Sunday, members of the Hillsdale community will perform Mozart's "Missa in honorem Sanctissimae Trinitas" at Holy Trinity Anglican Parish in Hillsdale, Mich. "We're able to bring lots of college and community folks from different religious backgrounds to do the orchestra and choral parts," said Father Duane Beauchamp, Holy Trinity pastor. (0) comments

JSTOR, a Web site hosting scholarly journals, updated their site on April 4 with a new user interface. Public Service Librarian Sarah Mitchell described JSTOR as streamlined. "You'll go into JSTOR and see something completely different," Mitchell said. The Web site now sports a new color palette and a more accurate search engine. (0) comments

The Hillsdale County Conservation Club will host the National Wild Turkey Federation's Women in the Outdoors program on Saturday, April 19. The cost is $45. The most popular courses include trap shooting, or shooting at clay pigeons launched from a spring trap. (0) comments

Assistant Professor of History David Raney will act as director of Hillsdale College's Honors Program beginning next semester. Provost Robert Blackstock selected him after Assistant Professor of Religion Don Westblade announced his resignation from the post. (0) comments
