Musicians react to music hall flood

While the rain poured Tuesday night, the Howard Music Hall basement flooded. About 10:45 p.m., senior JT Tucker noticed water creeping down the basement hall from the electrical closet at the end of the hall in the northeast corner. "I look over and it's like, 'that's water,' " Tucker said. (0) comments

A World War II veteran Marine will visit campus next Tuesday and Wednesday, speaking about World War II, post-World War II Chinese politics and contemporary Chinese art. Gerry Jones, 78, first arrived in China in 1945 after the Okinawa campaign, disarming and repatriating Japanese soldiers with the 1st Marine Division, in which he trained as a scout and sniper. He lived in China for the next 16 years, during the communist revolution under Chairman Mao that forever changed geopolitics. (0) comments

Storm to mix snow, frigid temperatures

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch for Hillsdale County for tonight and Friday. The storm is expected to drop between six to 10 inches of snow. This is the latest in a week of bone-chilling winter weather which can affect students' health and change their habits. (0) comments

A construction oversight caused a fire hazard in Grewcock Student Union that will keep fireplaces cold and dark until contractors fix the mistake this spring. The gas fireplaces were lit during the union opening on Jan. 18, but administrators noticed that wood paneling surrounding the stone chimney was hot and at risk of catching fire. (0) comments

Praxis, Hillsdale College's political economy club, began the semester last Thursday evening by showing the film "The Ultimate Resource" in the television lounge of Grewcock Student Union. The film, which marked one of many diverse events Praxis has hosted in the past six months, drew more than 30 students. (0) comments

In the past two weeks, Student Federation filled a vacant representative seat, proposed revising the student meal plan and granted money to Athletes in Action, Best Buddies, the Winona and Young Life. "We are a very young group," said federation President Craig Kreinbihl, a junior. (0) comments

The bright blue sidewalk where graduating seniors have traditionally scribbled and painted tributes to their college experience was removed, but will return in time for the class of 2008 to leave their mark. If you want to cuddle up with your hubby the next time "10 Thing I Hate About You," is playing, well, you can't. But hubby club can. "When the weather was bad, he'd be down in the dumps because he couldn't ride his bike to school," junior Jake Donovan said of the professor who even rode his Harley Davidson as far as Kansas to visit his daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. The men of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity recently came up the hill to join the women - for brunch, that is. The fraternity began last semester to eat one meal in the school cafeteria during the week, like each of the sororities does. Delta Sigma Phi President Danny Baldwin, a junior, said the fraternity chose Sunday brunch, since that is the best meal of the week in the Knorr Family Dining Hall. (0) comments

Circle K club is collecting donations for the Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. Students and faculty may drop off donations in the Grewcock Student Union until Friday. Collection bins will rest in every dorm from Feb. 2 to Feb. 11. The club recommends donating new items such as coloring books, crayons, games, children's books, CDs, movies and stuffed animals. Michael Ward, author of the new book "Planet Narnia," explained his theory that the seven Narnia books model ancient conceptions of the planets in his speech in Phillips Auditorium Jan. 18. Ward, an Anglican priest and C.S. Lewis expert from Cambridge, England, is touring the United States to promote his work. He spoke with The Collegian about faith, fable and his study of another Cambridge scholar. (0) comments

College bookstore settles into Union location

The new location of the Hillsdale College Bookstore in the Grewcock Student Union gives patrons a fresh glimpse into product quantity and variety. Students are more apt to mill in and out. The usual assortment of binders, notebooks and pens are highly organized and abundant, and window seats, complete with cushion, nestle amid the books. (1) comment
